An encounter with the self: A thematic and content analysis of the DMT experience from a naturalistic field study

In this article, the effects of N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a psychedelic drug capable of producing intense experiences that challenge one's perception of self and reality, are explored through in-depth interviews. The study found that DMT use elicits profound and highly intense experiences across several categories, including sensory, emotion and body, space-time shifts, bodily effects, sensorial effects, psychological effects, and emotional effects.

Interestingly, the study also found resonances with previous DMT studies and other types of extraordinary experiences, such as the alien abduction, shamanic and near-death experiences. The potential neural mechanisms and the promise of DMT as a psychotherapeutic agent are also discussed.

As you read about the effects of DMT, you may find yourself wondering about the implications of these findings for our understanding of consciousness and the self. How might these experiences challenge our assumptions about what it means to be a conscious being?
