Can Psychedelics treat depression without the "TRIP"?

A new study published in PNAS this week investigated whether or not the alterations to consciousness that occur with psychedelic use are necessary for their therapeutic effects on depression. To do so, the researchers used a 5-HT2A/2C antagonist, ketanserin, to block psilocybin ( found in magic mushrooms) from binding to these receptors. The binding of psychedelics to the 5-HT2A receptors is believed to be what cause the "tripping" effects of psychedelics. In the study, the researchers administered both psilocybin and ketanserin to "depression model mice" and saw that even in the presence of ketanserin, the symptoms of depression were significantly alleviated. This is one of two studies (that I am aware of) that have looked into this. So much more research should be done in order to fully understand how the "tripping" aspect of psychedelics is involved in their treatment of mental illness.
